When Oprah, the NY Times, and Stephen Colbert interview you…
You have to be ready. In 2007, Wes Moore published his first book starting a whirlwind career as an author, scholar, and speaker (after switching from his Rhodes Scholar to Phi Theta Kappa to White House Fellow to Captain in the 82nd Airborne to high finance career, all before turning 32).
When it was time to release a full web presence for his powerful book, he turned to SWL to help bring his ideas to life.
I’ve had the pleasure of being involved early on with author, scholar, and speaker Wes Moore as he was developing his idea for the powerful book The Other Wes Moore and the personal site that would host the book: TheOtherWesMoore.com. Brainstorming with Wes and developing a myriad of ideas, a number of specifics bubbled to the surface. Wes was extremely flexible in allowing us to the freedom to make the most of it. We had discussions about his priorities for the site and how we could develop an appropriate solution. His goals were to inform, inspire, and connect.
Preparing fora meteoric launch & The Oprah Effect
Without hard data on the traffic spikes caused by major publications but full knowledge of the possibility of Oprah TV and Oprah.com viewers coming to the site, I planned accordingly. It involved working with engineers at MediaTemple to configure pre-warmed load-balancers and caches in prep for WSJ initially and then the blitz from Oprah. Traffic spiked 6x in a matter of minutes and all forms of delivery and data held up, the CDN delivering images, the MySQL database, and the infrastructure in place to capture orders and emails.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_background” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” enable_gradient=”true” color_overlay=”#eaeaea” color_overlay_2=”#ffffff” gradient_direction=”top_to_bottom” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ width=”1/3″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default”]
